What is the Pirate Funnel Canvas for?
The Pirate Funnel Canvas is a template of the Pirate Funnel model. The Pirate Funnel is used by growth hackers to find the weakest point of a business which you should focus on.
This AAARRR framework cuts a company in six steps (Awareness, Acquisition, Activation, Revenue, Retention and Referral). Customers have to flow through each of these steps and, by filling in this framework, you’ll find the gaps in your business.
This canvas is made to be printed out and helps you to fill in all the steps one-by-one, and see where you’d need to focus your efforts in improving your business growth.

- Define your steps
First you need to determine what each step looks like in your business: How do we measure ‘Activation’? What number do we use for that? Where can we get that number from?
- Fill in the numbers
Open the tools you need and fill in your numbers per Pirate Metric. Make sure that you pick the same time duration for measurement (for example the last 28 days).
- Find your bottleneck
In the last column you can fill in your conversion rate percentage between two steps: How many people survive the leap to the next step? The lowest percentage means that that’s the part of your Pirate Funnel to look at.
- Focus and pick your OMTM
If you’ve find your bottleneck, you know that this is the part of your business where you’ll get the most ‘bang for your buck’ when investing there in your growth hacking efforts. Lock this bottleneck as your One Metric That Matters for the upcoming weeks and start with rapid experimentation!
